HOPE

HOPE

~ IT IS INFINITELY BETTER TO HOPE FOR THE BEST THAN TO FEAR THE WORST. ~

- Meher Baba

It was deep in the night, but the creatures of the African savanna were stirring. Some paced restlessly, while others tossed and turned in agitation. Even the nocturnal fauna was uneasy.

They were well into the wet season, but not a single drop of rain had fallen on to the parched landscape. Waterholes were all but dried up. And if the heavens did not open soon, many were doomed.

Only wise old Mama Elephant slumbered, undisturbed by the cacophony of disturbance around her.

“How can you sleep so peacefully, at a time like this?” asked Brother Rhino, gruffly, the next morning, “Don’t you care what’s going to happen to us?”

“Of course, I do,” calmy replied Mama Elephant, “but let me tell you a secret.

I have spoken to my close friend, the great river Maya. She’s a messenger of the sea, a collector of stories she gathers from the many lands she travels through. Despite her weary, trickling state, she has promised to deliver my prayers for rain, to the mighty Lord Ocean. I have faith we shall be delivered. And in the meantime, I have hope.

That’s why I can sleep at night, dear Brother Rhino. For it is infinitely better to hope for the best than to fear the worst.”
