THE UNSEEN

THE UNSEEN

Nicole was wholly absorbed in her case notes, as she climbed the courthouse stairs. She was about to try her first case as a lawyer, and she was up against the best law firm in the state.

To make matters worse, defending counsel was Benjamin Deloe. With an impeccable win rate, he was known for his silver tongue. Enchanting juries and judges alike with a flash of his pearly whites, his no-mercy approach annihilated even the most-prepared prosecutor.

Speak of the devil. There he was.

With confidence radiating from every pore, he stood next to his client, John Frederick – Vice President of Robust Corp. The latter was accused of sexually assaulting his staff member, an African American hard-working single mother. Yet neither man looked perturbed. This case was just a blip on their radar.

“I’m going to screw you today, young lady,” lewdly chuckled Deloe, noticing her for the first time. Nicole felt sick to her stomach. She could tell by Deloe’s countenance that he knew just how crass his comment was.

At that moment a switch went off in Nicole’s head. All fear and self-doubt vanished. She knew exactly what she was facing, now and in the future. This was what she was going to fight against.

As the court proceedings played out, she not only stood up for Teresa’s rights but those of all women, including herself.

That case was her first victory over the patriarchy.
